On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, the Metro Nashville District Energy System unveiled a historic marker commemorating the system’s 50-year record supporting our city’s sustainability and utility independence. The event featured remarks by Mayor Freddie O’Connell, former Mayor Bill Purcell, and members of the Metropolitan Council.
The MNDES has provided centralized heating and cooling services to buildings in downtown Nashville since February, 1974. As one of the first U.S. cities to pair a district energy system with municipal solid waste. The system has grown significantly over the past 50 years and transitioned to a natural gas-fired steam plant at its current location in 2003. The marker signifies Nashville’s steadfast commitment to sustainable growth and innovation and is located along Korean Veteran’s Boulevard next to the current MNDES facility at 90 Peabody Street.
